SIL is Squamous (skin-like cell) Intraepithelial (within the skin-like layer) Lesion. There is Low level SIL and High level SIL, know as LoSIL and HiSIL. These are comparable to the older terminology of CIN 1-2 being LoSIL and CIN 2-3 being HiSIL and CIN is comparable to the even older terminology, dysplasia - mild (1), moderate (2) and severe (3). It is a precancerous lesion of the cervix frequently caused by a virus family known as H(uman) P(apilloma) V(irus).

Can't say. ?precursors to the precursor? ?infection?

The answer with respect to cervical cancer is, if the virus is a wart-like virus type (HPV Type 6, 11, etc) the liklihood of cancer in the future is low. If the HPV type is 16, 18, etc, the liklihood increases. The treatment depends upon the results of a colposcopy. This is an examination of the cervix under magnification whereby a biopsy or bipsies of the cervix are done under direct visualization. These biopsies indicate what the next step should be - observation, cryosurgery (freezing) or LEEP (removal of a portion o the cervix under local block). These treatments are NOT cures but after treatment, the "disease" may never return. We're waiting for a cure.
